A focused conversation about where you are now, where you want to get to, and whether mentoring can help
A Mentoring Discovery Call is a confidential, focused 30-minute conversation for business owners, directors and senior leaders who want clearer thinking, stronger accountability and practical support to move forward.
It is an opportunity to step back from the day-to-day pressures of running a business, explain what is happening, and explore whether executive mentoring would be the right form of support.
There is no need to arrive with all the answers. The purpose is to understand your situation, priorities and ambitions, and to decide whether there is a good fit.
What is covered in the call?
The conversation is structured around four areas:
1. Your current position
We will explore what is happening in your business, team or role at the moment.
This may include growth plans, commercial performance, leadership pressures, people challenges, sales and marketing, operations, cash, decision-making, confidence or workload.
2. Your priorities and ambitions
We will discuss what you want to achieve over the next six to twelve months, both for the business and for you personally as a leader.
You may have a clear goal already, or you may simply know that something needs to change.
3. What is getting in the way
We will identify the main challenges, risks, frustrations or barriers currently slowing progress.
This could include lack of time, unclear strategy, competing priorities, team capability, poor accountability, inconsistent sales, cash pressures or feeling stretched too thinly.
4. Whether mentoring is the right support
We will explore how mentoring could help, what a programme might look like, and whether I am the right person to support you.
This is an honest conversation. If mentoring is not the right solution, or I am not the right fit, I will say so.
What preparation do I need to do?
You do not need to prepare a formal presentation, business plan or detailed financial information.
It is helpful to spend a few minutes thinking about:
- What is working well in the business or your role?
- What is not working as well as you would like?
- What feels most urgent or important?
- What would you like to be different in six or twelve months?
- What is currently taking too much of your time or energy?
- What decisions, conversations or actions have you been putting off?
- What support would make the greatest difference?
You are welcome to bring notes, key figures or questions, but these are not essential.
Questions I may ask
The exact questions will depend on your circumstances, but may include:
- What prompted you to book this call now?
- What are the most important issues or opportunities facing you?
- What would you like the business to achieve over the next year?
- What would success look like for you personally in your role?
- Where do you feel most confident, and where do you feel under pressure?
- What is currently preventing progress?
- Which decisions have been difficult to make?
- What are the main pressures on your time, focus or energy?
- How clear is your strategy, plan and set of priorities?
- How well is your leadership team working together?
- Are responsibilities, expectations and accountability clear?
- How confident are you in your sales, marketing, operations and financial performance?
- What support have you had before, and what worked well or not so well?
- What would make mentoring genuinely valuable for you?
- What level of commitment are you able to give to making changes?
What will you take away from the call?
By the end of the call, you should have:
- Greater clarity about the issues that matter most
- A clearer view of your immediate priorities
- An honest assessment of whether mentoring is likely to help
- An outline of how support could work in practice
- A clear recommendation on the most suitable next step
In some cases, the most valuable outcome may simply be greater clarity about what you need next, even where that is not mentoring.
How long is the call?
The Discovery Call lasts approximately 30 minutes.
This is enough time to understand the broad picture, discuss your priorities and decide whether a further conversation or mentoring proposal would be useful.
What happens after the call?
At the end of the call, we will agree the most appropriate next step.
This may be:
- A mentoring proposal tailored to your circumstances
- A follow-up strategy or diagnostic session
- A recommendation for a different type of support
- A decision that now is not the right time to proceed
Where mentoring is a good fit, I will explain the recommended format, likely focus, session frequency, fees and practical arrangements before you make any commitment.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know exactly what I need help with?
No. Many people book a Discovery Call because they know something needs to change but have not yet fully defined the problem. The conversation will help bring greater clarity.
Is this mentoring, coaching or consulting?
The support may include elements of mentoring, coaching and practical business challenge. The balance depends on your needs, experience and the outcomes you want to achieve.
Can we discuss sensitive or confidential matters?
Yes. The conversation is confidential and provides a safe space to discuss business, leadership, team and personal professional issues openly.
Is this suitable if my business is performing well?
Yes. Mentoring is not only for difficult periods. It can be valuable when a business is growing, entering a new phase, preparing for change, or when a leader wants to raise their performance.
Can more than one person attend the call?
Yes, where appropriate. For example, a business owner may wish to include a fellow director, business partner or HR lead. It is usually best to agree this in advance.
Will I receive advice during the call?
The main purpose is to understand your situation and assess fit. You may leave with useful perspective or initial ideas, but it is not intended to replace a full mentoring or strategy session.
What if mentoring is not right for me?
That is a useful outcome in itself. I will be honest about whether mentoring is likely to add value and may suggest a more appropriate form of support where relevant.
How quickly could mentoring begin?
This depends on availability and the type of support required. Where there is a good fit, we can agree a practical start date and session schedule.
